In an era where leadership demands flexibility, innovation, and a deep understanding of one's own capabilities, the ASPIRE program stands out as a beacon for mid-managers and emerging leaders in career services who are looking to elevate their leadership acumen. Through an immersive experience, tailored growth strategies, and an unwavering commitment to personal development, ASPIRE is a transformative journey that reshapes how participants view leadership and their potential within it.

Our Partner Engagement Consultant, Sharon Attaway, recently connected with Scott to learn more about the ASPIRE program's lasting impact on him.

Personal Growth and Development

How has the ASPIRE program contributed to your personal and professional growth?

The ASPIRE program has been instrumental in my personal and professional development. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, challenging me to think more strategically and develop a deeper understanding of my leadership style. The program has significantly enhanced my ability to lead effectively while prioritizing growth opportunities. It also inspired me to embrace continuous learning and innovation as key elements of my leadership journey.

Can you share a specific instance where the program helped you overcome a professional challenge?

A specific instance where the ASPIRE program made a significant impact was when I was overwhelmed with work. The first thing that slipped was dedicating time to my personal growth and reflection. However, I recalled a powerful lesson from ASPIRE: "Protect your time" and "Be selfish with you." Embracing this mindset, I realized that prioritizing my development made me a more effective leader and teammate. This valuable reminder guides me as I plan my weeks and months, ensuring I stay focused on what truly matters.

Networking and Community

How did the C-Group interactions influence your experience in the ASPIRE program?

The C-Group interactions were a cornerstone of my ASPIRE experience. Being part of a diverse group of peers allowed me to gain new perspectives and learn from others' experiences. The supportive environment fostered open discussions, where we could share challenges and solutions, greatly enriching my learning experience. It is so crucial to have a group of peers outside your institution that you can look to for advice and guidance and sometimes just to vent.

Can you describe any lasting connections or collaborations that emerged from the program?

Several lasting connections and collaborations emerged from the ASPIRE program. I've stayed in touch with many of my cohort members, and we regularly exchange ideas and support one another's professional endeavors. These relationships have become an invaluable part of my professional network, offering ongoing opportunities for collaboration and growth. Members of our C-group often connect to discuss similar initiatives we have going on at our institutions and where we might have some alignment.

Unique Experiences and Connections

What was the most impactful session or activity during the in-person intensive in the Rocky Mountains?

The most impactful session for me was the Mountain Overlook Time. This was a time of deep reflection and was so incredibly valuable.

How did the program contribute to your continuous development?

The ongoing online cohort meetings were vital in keeping the momentum going after our in-person time in Estes Park. These regular touchpoints allowed us to delve deeper into the concepts we had learned and apply them to our current work situations. The continuous support and accountability helped me to stay focused on my development goals.

A Personal Refresh

How did the personal refresh activities within the program help you in your professional journey?

One of the highlights of my ASPIRE experience was the emphasis on personal refresh activities. As leaders, we're often in constant motion—putting out fires, responding to unexpected challenges, and transitioning quickly from one project to the next. ASPIRE helped me recognize the importance of prioritizing activities like reflection and recharging, which are essential for sustaining my passion and enthusiasm for my work.

Can you share any personal takeaways from the program that have stayed with you?

One personal takeaway that has stayed with me is to “be selfish with you”. This takeaway has enabled me to protect my time for thinking, reflection, and strategy work.

Beyond Your Standard Professional Development Experience

How would you describe the ASPIRE program to someone considering it for their professional development?

I would describe the ASPIRE program as a transformative experience that equips you with the tools, skills, and mindset needed to excel in leadership. It’s not just about learning new concepts but also applying them in real-time, building meaningful relationships, and emerging as a more confident and capable leader.

What advice would you give to other mid-level managers or aspiring leaders considering the ASPIRE program?

My advice is to fully embrace the ASPIRE program’s opportunities for self-reflection and growth. Don’t just go through the motions—engage deeply with the content, participate actively in discussions, and be open to feedback. The more you invest in the program, the more you’ll get out of it.
